I agree with everything you said except for one thing. I've always been a bit bothered by the whole "you have a better chance of becoming (insert what you want here), than a pro tuba player" Liek the bogeyman, this is just intended to give us nightmares. Remember, there are a heck of a lot more people out there trying to become a pro baseball players (Or pretty much just about anything else) than there are people trying to become pro tuba players. If there were as many people in tuba world as there are in the minor leagues, all going for the New York Phil, then this statistic would ring true. Al Baer won the job, but he was competing against probably only 20 other people who had a realistic shot.

ps. I know that there are more openings for ball players than tuba players, but the increased amount of ball player wannabes would make getting one of those job just as difficult
