What was different in your second attempt? Oh, "pilot".

I agree that some are difficult to play. I'm glad mine isn't one of them.

I think a medium-sized community band must play a lot louder and with a lot less tonality than a medium-sized professional orchestra, because I don't get the impression that I'm overpoweringly present in that group, and I can only aspire to being "the right pilot". In a band, a big tuba can put a floor under the group that helps to broaden its tonal range, where Power-Sound tubas (Alex, Miraphone, etc.) tend to just be part of the herd. Orchestras have a different and more brilliant tonal palette, and the big-tuba sound is more of a contrast. But it's still nice for lots of stuff as a unique point of tonal color. Thus, I would change "most" to "some", because I'd bet there are more amateur-quality community bands out there than small-to-mid-size professional orchestras, heh, heh.
