Dale, I think the poster is talking about Titanium nitride--the very hard coating deposited on drill bits, faucets and cabinet hardware that simulates a gold finish. It's not electroplated, but applied via vapor deposition, so the substrate material is far less critical. (For some PVD processes,the substrate doesn't even have to be electrically conductive).
