While facial structure plays a large part in the choice of a mouthpiece, a smaller cup diameter should make it easier to play in the upper register. By using a smaller diameter cup, one shortens the "length" of the embouchure, making it easier for the lips to vibrate faster and produce a higher pitch. An analogy would be comparing the length of the strings on a bass with those on a cello. While there is some overlap in their registers, the shorter strings on a cello (along with the smaller instrument size) allow faster vibrations and higher notes.

As stated below, however, cup depth and comfort also play a large part, and all of these factors should be taken into account.
