As TubaRay already said: your band director is correct. The seventh partial tone (i.e. the seventh note one will get without pressing any valve) is a very flat Ab, the trombone player can use a very short 2nd position to get the G. You have to use the 8th partial (High Bb) together with 1st and 2nd valve to get a G in tune.

I think your main problem is to go from an open 6th partial F to the 1-2 8th partial G, "jumping over" one partial tone. Try the following: play the High F first with open fingering and after this on 1-3; slur up to Gb on 2-3; slur up to G on 1-2.
