The biggest problem I have is a dead spot between the low register and the upper register, right around Bb on the staff. And I've come to the conclusion that the problem is lack of embouchure strength.

Bingo for me too. Smack dab in the middle of the staff. Once I get up to F, slurring around the G, A, and B are fine. Ask me to smoothly slur from D to E in the staff - youch - sometimes it works, sometimes not. I figure I'm doing things right (I've not been told otherwise), I just need more face time. With time to practice at a premium, I've been trying to work in alternatives to playing. For a while I would work on free buzzing walking back and forth to my car in the parking lot. That seemed to help a bunch. I went from barely being able to buzz at all to an OK buzz. I've gotten lazy about doing them lately. I think its time to get back in the habit of doing this.
