The PT-48 has a large rim diameter, and how you like that will depend on your face as much as anything. The rim is more rounded than a Conn Helleberg, and less rounded than a Bach 18. The 18 may actually be a bit deeper. The 48 is not as deep as many funnel-shaped mouthpieces, and has a more rounded bowl, but not as round as the 18. The throat is bigger, as I recall.

On my Miraphone, it can peel paint if you want, and it makes a good mouthpiece for getting extra bit of power in the sound. On the Holton, it maintains focus and lets the Holton be big without being woofy. Smaller mouthpieces with more of a funnel shape might do as well, but the diameters don't fit my face well. For example, I have real trouble working with a Helleberg 7B, which is not uncommon for use with big tubas. The smaller diameter feels uncomfortable, and I still get a fuzzy, woofy sound with it. I think the big tubas work really well with a mouthpiece that has some rounding in the bowl.
