Actually, I sort of think that the 621 has more British influence than American. It's definitely a crossover instrument, though, as many are. Bevan (or was it Stauffer?) has a picture of a Boosey cavalry tuba from a little over a century ago that has a remarkably 621-ish shape--right down to the front-action valves.

The 822, on the other hand, seems to follow a plan more like vintage American tubas.

But all the Yamahas are hybrids to some extent, like many of the current German-made instruments.
