It is not common practice to double the tuba part. This is an entirely unique recording in that you have 2 of the premier players of our time doubling the part.

As I recall Tommy Johnson telling me while I was in school at USC, on thsi recording Roger Bobo played a Miraphone 184 CC and Tommy played a 185. Either one of them could make more than enough sound for any orchestra, but its simply amazing how much sound they put out together! Another phenomenal example of the Bobo/Johnson sound is Strauss's Alpine Symphony with Mehta, which may not be in print. Start scouring your used CD shops for that one. Its worth its weight in gold!! LA Phil also recorded Varese's Arcana with Mehta conducting. Seemed Mr. Mehta loved the tuba! Actually, his father, Mehli Mehta, loved to hear the brass and you ofetn could not play loud enough for him. Perhaps its a genetic thing??!
