The story goes (as I recall)...
The personnel manager for the LAPO looked at the score and saw "tenor tuba" and thought that meant simply "another tuba." So he called Tommy Johnson for the recording session. The error was realized after Mr. Johnson showed up, but Mehta decided that he'd like to have two tubas so he kept Mr. Johnson for the recording.
If I'm remembering wrong, someone help me out!
