The President's Own Marine Band is arguably the most competitive band job in this nation. As long as you are old enough to enlist in the Marine Corp you are old enough to audition. But, it may be VERY VERY VERY VERY difficult to be competitive at that level with as little experience as you have. I have never heard you play before, but assume that you have been first chair in your All-State Band for several years and have also been studying privatelly for a few years with a musician who has held a professional playing position with either a large ensemble or a major small ensemble. Ask your teacher if (s)he honestly believes that you are competitive enough in a larger sense to justify a trip to DC to play for those guys.

I know most of tubists over at the Marine Band and they are all good guys and would give you just as much of a fair listening as anyone else. Problem is that they have to listen to literally dozens and dozens of players on audition day. Somewhere between 50-100 people show up. It would be very helpful to them if fewer of the obviously unqualified people would not show up unprepared.

If you do decide to go, at the very least have enough respect for the audition committee to be prepared to 150% of your abilities.
