It has nothing to do with the line frequency, as these things are powered by "universal" series-wound motors. Rather, the frequency you hear is probably the fan noise (or maybe the brushes) and that frequency varies with load. Listen to the Hoffnung Festival recordings--that high-pitched whine is nowhere near 50 or 100 Hz.
