I got the best solution to this age old problem. Go to Home Depot and find the carpet department. You'll see huge rolls of cheap carpeting of various types. Keep looking for smaller rolls which include carpet runners. Near there you will find a roll of material used to keep area rugs from moving on a wood or tile floor. It's usually tan in color and has a waffle look to it. It is extremely cheap to buy a piece that you can cut easily to a size that you can drape across your lap. It lasts a long time, is thin and light, easy to carry, and it works great. Too bad it doesn't come in black. Good luck!!
