Yup. I knew that one already.
As I think about it, the problem is not with the spread of my pinkie and index finger, but with the inability to place the two fingers in between in the right places. And to get my finger on the E string with the thumb on the back of the neck, my wrist is bending in ways it was not designed to. I'm having to hold the guitar at a fairly radical angle to get my hand under it.
