Since a great deal of used and defunct instruments happen at the student level, most older highschools and some colleges often have forgotten oldies but goodies in the attics and back storage closets. Usually these need lots of dent work and some braces resoldered, but are often decent old beginner horns. A few yeras ago when I was in high school we had several sousaphones of various american manufacture (primarily pan americans and conns) along with working but dented up badly king 1240's and some not so nice 1140 3/4 tubas. We had boght some nicely priced used 11J's (convertible) from the local Univeristy and the director really liked the look of drum corps style tubas. I hated them and tryed and tryed to get the sousas on the field, but only managed to do so for pep-band. Eventually towards the end of high school the sousas ended up going to a "needy" high school in our district that was revamping their marching band program and replacing thier cracked fiber-sousas with the brass ones. The concert tubas may very well be still sitting in some dark closet or attic of the band room. Bottom line: try your local high schools and colleges. Sometimes they may deal to make some needed money to make a uniform payment and colleges, well some, have money allocated for instruments so they cycle through the horns every so many years. Good luck.
