I store instruments with the slides out an inch or 2, and with the valve bottoms (and tops in the case of pistons) backed off a little (ie unscrewed a fraction). It seems to be easier to push a seized slide, then pull it fully out, than it is to just do the latter. Silver instruments can look terrible a few months after cleaning and storage, but I've had excellent results with the Hagerty's spray.
