The hardest thing for a band director of a public school to do is get rid of anything in a manner that even resembles common sense. Due to most state laws, property owned by a school system cannot be resold. I know of at least two tuba players that got instruments after receiving a tip that they should look in a particular dumpster on a particular day.

My high school still had their uniforms from the 1940's up in a closet, because none of the band directors could ever get permission to get rid of them.

I found a c.1930's(?) brass King sousaphone up in that closet. Thing weighed about 50 lbs, and the brass was at least a 16th of an inch thick. Wish I could have played it, but there was no neck. Still had the original green-velvet-lined case, though.

Ya wanna see old horns? Go to an old school and look in their band storage areas.
