In my own humble experience, the sensitivity to the location of a cut varies by location. You can change the bell on an instrument without having much of an effect on intonation. But the first couple of feet after the valves seems to be very sensitive to being fooled with. So Joe's suggestion of cutting closer to the bell than the valves would seem to be right on.
