To say Lew was head of the AFM Symphonic Services underrates his role there. He created AFM Symphonic Services, and had much to do with emergence of orchestra conferences in the AFM, such as ICSOM, and ROPA. He made the AFM Symphony Strike Fund a reality, for which many, many musicians owe him thanks. Much of the information sharing throughout the symphony bargaining units - auditions notices, contracts, pay rates, was compiled and made available for the first time during Lew's tenure.

Lew was a very fine musician, and I had the opportunity to hear on numerous occasions back in the 1960s. We had an embarassment of riches in NYC at that time, with Lew at the City Opera, and Herb Wekselblatt at the Met.

Fiercely intelligent, Lew had success in just about everything he tackled.

His second career was centered on bettering the livelihoods of other musicians employed in orchestras throughout the United States (and Canada), and to do that, he retired from active musical performance. I only wish more of the younger musicians who read this stuff could have heard him, and known him.
