In my opinion... polished raw brass looks much better than lacquer that is worn and peeling. As far as changing the timbre in concerned, an oscilloscope MIGHT be able to tell the difference.... but not the human ear. The thing that is nice about having a horn in raw brass is that it really gives you options. 1) you can rag it out and have it lacquered, or... 2) you can always have it plated. Lacquer is really a pain in the butt after it begins to look a little shabby. If I get a horn with crappy lacquer it goes directly into the stripping tank.
