I don't use the thumbring either. I find that it is fairly comfortable if I put my thumb under the slide. Using the thunb ring would be okay for me, if you could move it low enough. Though the ring doesn't adjust small enough to fit lower down, I think this could be sorted out by putting a bigger piece of cork on the ring. I haven't tried this though as resting my thumb under the slide works fine for me.
