I asked the composers in the music dept. where I work (HGTV) what they use. They use a program called LogicAudio. This program is more of a sampling / MIDI program, but has dynamite notational capabilities as well. It's high end, so it may be more program than you want. The URL has links to numerous notational programs, and also some free/shareware.
