You know, I'll be honest and admit that if I had a great F tuba with fast valves, I'd probably give the John Williams a shot. But I'm not certain that would convince me that it's a great piece from the audience standpoint, or from a purely musical one. However, I really find it odd that that the the Vaughan Williams gets sneered at so often these days. Granted, it's become the Tchaik 4 of tuba pieces but why knock it for that reason? Most of the symphony going public still have not heard the piece! I had a viola playing girlfriend for many years (yeah, I lost her, so sue me) who honestly could not get enough of that middle movement - it's positively gorgeous. I can't think of another piece that could do that for me. However, I know we all need to move on from the V.W. Transcribing the Strauss Horn Concerti makes a lot of sense to me. Alright, let me have it now - go ahead.
