Harvey Phillips once said that he would have been as fine a violinist as he was a tubist. He just happened to play the tuba, not the violin. He is as fine a musician as Itzhak Perlman. But I think Harvey would have made a lot more money if he had chosen to study violin instead of tuba. There are many fine musicians who happen to play tuba. The fact that there is virtually no commercial market for tuba soloists would seem to answer your question.
