Thank you for your insights. I, too, have fallen victim to the same watering-down effect of over-the-air broadcasts. Last year I was part of a very insightful Mahler 2nd. Being friends with the recording engineer I was able to hear the "raw" version and was very happy with the sound of the low brass. However, the radio mix was awful, very "mid-rangy". I have yet to understand why. As to Warren's Frankenstein, Have you ever seen the picture of Fred Geib in an older edition of his method? It is the exact instrument Warren played on in the early 80's. I heard from a friend who heard it, etc, etc, that he bought the horn from one of Geibs students and worked some really bad pitch problems out. Again this info is second hand, take it for what it's worth. Again, I thank you for your insights. I hope to keep the ball rolling on this post.
