I can't imagine the trombone part being appropriate. It would destroy the "voiceing "of the orchastra most of the time. He should play the double bass part down one octave. He should use this as an opportunity to learn to make the octave transposition down. Tubaists have to do that all the time and you are not a complete tubaist without that skill.

I have played both double bass parts in orchastras. If you are sensative you can actually help the bass section by providing more precice articulation, better tone, more dynamic range, more precice tuning (let's see, what else is there).

I guess we could just eliminate the double basses and have a tuba section. That would improve SOME orchastras I've heard. ( sorry, I just CAN'T RESIST ribbing the basses)
