My personal favorite method to try out horns is to make a two day trip out of it. Spend one day at the brasswind. Drive a couple hours north to Ferndale and spend the night in a cheap hotel. Spend the next morning at custom. By that afternoon you should have it narrowed down to a couple horns and know whether or not you need to stay at custom or drive back to south bend to pick out your specific horn. Short of going to a convention this is the only way you are really going to be able to try out everthing there is. The only tuba I can think of not offered by one of these two places is the St. Pete and it is my opinion that there are plenty of other horns that fill this same market niche *and* play just as well or better. One benefit over a convention is that you will actually be able to hear yourself when you try horns out at the place of business.
just my two cents,
joseph
