What I would recommend in this particular instance would be to obtain string bass parts from the orchestra director and have your son write in the notes down an octave. This would be the quickest solution and would begin to teach him how to read down the octave, a valueable skill.String bass parts in general would be more appropriate in terms of register and pitches. If you're looking to dive in to music notation, I would suggest either Finale Print Music 2000, by Coda Music Technology, or Sibelius, both of which are excellent beginner level notation programs.
