I was accustomed to setting big CC's on the left corner of a chair, and dropping my left leg over the left side of the chair and my right leg over the front of the chair, pointing the left front corner of the chair towards the conductor. I would spread my legs far enough apart to accomodate the instrument. That worked fine, but I wasn't satisfied with success. I had to try out a playing cradle. The problem for me with the cradle stand was the fact that the cradle (by requiring to tuba to rest in front of the chair, rather than on the chair) placed the tuba farther from my mouth, and I had to bend farther forward in order to play. Well, my muscles weren't used to that set up and I ended up with a very stiff neck after a couple of nights playing the same three hour show that way.

I don't know if relaying this experience will help you at all, but I wish relief from pain for you, sir.
