You don't mention what mouthpiece you're using, but my experience with 641's has also been that they are pretty sensitive to mpc. changes. As I recall, they ship with a Yamaha 69C4 as their stock mouthpiece. If you can get the sound you want with that mpc., it might help the intonation some.

I would also recommend that you try some sort of singing. If you have the time, your school's chorus program might be an excellent source for some ear training. In order to play in tune, you need to be able to sing a phrase in tune, given only a reference pitch at the beginnng.

If the horn is pretty beat up, check for any type of air leaks. That's a guaranteed tuning problem.

The suggestion about getting some private lessons that was posted by Mr. Dawg is the best solution, since none of us can see or hear you play. If a veteran player can play your horn in tune, you can too with a little time in the woodshed.
