On MOST tubas, you can reach the first valve slide. This is necessary to tube 1&2 notes, and the flat 5th partial, first valve note. Left hand position is different depending on the instrument. MOST builders take into consideration acces to the first slide. If not, you have to find your own posture for each instrument you play.
