It sounds like both Tom B. and Brad have valid points (see previous two posts). The plastic thing on the top of the valves on a Yamaha is called a valve guide to the best of my knowledge. Tom B. has probably come closest to diagnosing your problem. Regular valve oil is petroleum based (I've heard kerosene with the smell removed) and it evaporates and leaves a hard residue. There are several things that will disolve the residue, but have you researched the many threads on this board that deal with BiNaK oil. It not only doesn't evaporate, it will disolve the gunk. Be aware you will probably have to wipe down yours valves and re oil about three times before all the gunk is gone. After that the gunk doesn't come back, the valves only need a couple of drops every month or so, and they are usually much faster. BiNaK is expensive, but it is very good
