I agree, it would be nice if he took a look a variety of the band emerging, but at the same time, he has to make it engaging. The best way to do this is with a story. Burns had a tough task: present a lot of information in a way that would be interesting to as large an audience as possible. While I have not watched the series yet (the tapes are next to the VCR), it sounds like he decided to do a lot of storytelling in order to hold interest. But still, it needs to have enough breadth so that it is a doc on Jazz and not "Great Influences in Jazz." Maybe the future ones will be better.
