Having done some piddling around on bass trombone myself, I received this one jewel of wisdom from a trombonist colleague of mine (mad props for Dave Gravesen):
Be sure to do a lot of listening to good bass trombonists (Doug Yeo, Blair Bollinger, etc.) so you develop a solid BT sound concept. It's really easy to fall into the trap of trying to play a BT like a tuba. The sound is, as dave described it, much more focused.
Oh yeah, and NEVER trust a monkey.
