I wouldn't put anything on the horn (as a bow protector). I have two new tubas (one's a 6/4) and have a similar phobia, but at the same time realize there is just so much I can do. I don't wear certain large-buckle belts and then am extremely careful with the horns themself (placement on the floor, picking up, carrying, etc.). There will be scratches, yes.

My BIGGEST concern is keeping my horns dent--free. So far so good. Knock on metal.

But whatever you put on the horn itself, would in time scratch it! Just use common sense--control what YOU can control and then be careful and then go and practice.
