If it's a band worth auditioning for, the most important factors at the audition will be clarity of sound, good rhythm, and a decisive interpretation of the fine print. Of course, playing the right notes in tune is a given. If everybody in the section plays a 7/4 tuba, then you probably shouldn't walk into the audition w/a 1/2 size. On the other hand, didn't Pat Sheridan win the Marine Band gig long ago on a Yamaha "intermediate" model (YEP-321S) EEb?
