When I was younger I used petrolium jelly on my slides but the results were disappointing and as another follow up pointed out it can corrode slides. I now use PURE lanoline and it works geat. You can get it at most pharmacies. Put a small amount on the slide, rub it on with your finger and you're ready to go. You also might want to spray some water on the slide, this makes it slicker. I've found that the pure lanoline will not gob up inside the slides like some slide creames.
