That all depends on where you go. I tried to do that exact same thing and was laughed out of the financial aid office. It's really sad that I could buy a laptop and call it school related and get a loan but when I'm a tuba performance major, I can't get any money for a horn.
I ended up using my vehicle as collatoral and got some loan money but had to start making payments then on it...which is hard because I too am poor and using all my money I make to pay bills...
