Small changes in bore in critical places makes a great difference. The German manufacturers have computer programs that allow for such adjustments. Acoustical science is very well developed in this area.

My goal in making a double tuba was to find out how well one would work and I have done so. It could be improved. It gets one close to the well tempered scale on all of the notes and gives certain flexibility only obtainable on a double instrument.

True, it is a bit hard to carry but keep in mind that many famous tubists carry that much extra weight 24 hours a day year in and year out!

I have no doubt that many tubists can play anything in tune and all they need concern themselves with is a proper sound. If only we knew what a proper sound should be we could try for one.
