I'm sure that in your mind's "3D visualizer" you have a good concept of what I am talking about. You need a heckuva good machinist to avoid screwing up (or snapping off - AAAAAAAAAaaaaahhhhhh!!!!!!!!!) your valve stem (when a rotor is being secured in the press or mill and drilled out).

Obviously, there are four areas from which to "dig" material, and one REALLY must pay attention to how deep one "digs".

It significantly reduces inertia...The risk?...your call. I did it on one on MY tubas, but I ain't doin' it on someone else's.
