Sean, go back in time ten or twelve years, to the back room of a house in San Antonio, where I heard the same gentleman play The Ride on his Alex. That sound is with me still. In that lesson, he also demonstrated on my tuba just to show me that it wasn't the horn.

At the time, I couldn't understand all of what he was showing me. But I'm still picking bits out of those few lessons 15 years later.

But before I took any lessons with him, I heard him play with San Antonio, and that sound is what made me seek him out for lessons in the first place. Had I had such a listening experience in school, I would be a better player today. Much better.
