The standard remedy is to expand the inner slide tubing just a bit using the appropriate expandable mandrel. It takes a fine touch to do it right, but I would expect it's a routine fix for a repair tech.

Yes, heavier grease will help in the meantime. Grease is oil with a soap emulsifier, so use a lubricant that is mostly soap (this is the general meaning of "soap"). Anhydrous lanolin is the most commonly available high-soap grease, and it will fill a sizeable gap. In fact, unless you pull the slide frequently, you might find this is an adequate fix for the foreseeable future. If you pull the slide to empty water, though, nothing will last long. A heavy automotive grease will work, too, but it may separate and a little oil may go places you don't want it to.
