It is close enough that 5ths and other intervals can be lipped in tune. My idea was eliminate gross errors that exist even with simple valve combinations that may be a couple inches too short. It is also possible to play 1/4 tone chromatic scales using various valve combinations. I do not know them all myself,however.

Try the low octave in the tuba part to the B & H band transcription of Les Preludes by Lizt. It is fast slurred between low EEb and CC and adds a lot to the ensemble when done on compensating BBb tubas. It can be also done on the compensating Eb tuba which usually has too many harmonics in the tone to add much to the ensemble.
