When you hire someone for a playing position or teaching position, there is a very strong chance that the individual will be there for 20+ years. It can also be difficult to cut someone loose because their musical standards are lacking. You don't want to choose someone if you aren't sure. If you do hear someone who knocks your socks off, then the choice is much simpler. As an auditionee it can be frustrating when no one is chosen, but it makes sense for the ensemble.
