Although a great book, there is a big controversy over wether or not the "Testimony" is authentic. It has been heavily debated ever since publication of Volkov's book. Laurel Fay and Richard Taruskin are two big names in this debate, however, there is the book by Allen B. Ho & Dmitry Feofanov entitled "Shostakovich Reconsidered" which attempts to support the validity of the Volkov "Testimony". It has caused me much confusion. I truly adore Shostakovich. In any case, "Testimony" is a must read for any musician or anyone who has an interest in Shostakovich. I hope it is true! I love thinking Shostakovich actually felt the way he did in what was written. Kudos to Gary Press!!! Great thread!!!
