I thought the same thing when I heard about it.
So I've ordered some fairly lethal rare-earth magnets and will let you know how it works. Total cost was about $50 through a surplus dealer. These are no refrigerator magnets--they'll easily lift over 100 lbs. I'll put some mylar film (Mac-Tac) over the magnet surface to guard against scratches.
Either regular dent balls or surplus steel large ball bearings should do fine for the other part.
