I think i agree. But lets go one step further. It seems to me that a violinist can either play VIOLIN or FIDDLE but usually not both. I.E., two different styles of music. Which means typically (as usual, these are generalizations) a "fiddle" player would never make it in an orchestra, and i'd bet most orchestra players would not be good in the "bluegrass/redneck/non-symphonic" world. A euphonium player, however, must be flexible enough to cover anything at anytime, simply because thats the way it is (though im sure there is some fundamental reason). Combine that with many more military bands than full-time orchestras and i think a good euph player out of 15 others has a MUCH better chance than a violin player out of hundreds of others.
