Robert King Music used to sell a tome called "A Teacher's Guide to the Literature of Brass Instruments" By Mary Rasmussen. I forget her exact words, but she had a strong opinion aginst the tuba as a solo instrument. Robert King must have shared her opinion,
as he tended to weaken or write out the tuba parts on some of his arrangments, notably his arrangment of the Ewald quintet #1 or "Symphony" as he called it.
