Be sure not to have too narrow of a definition of 'gig'. There are a lot of colleges that have, as their primary tuba/euph instructor, a Eupher. Some places (North Texas jumps to mind) have both (Don Little and Brian Bowman). If you define 'gig' as a full-time playing situation, rotsa ruck. Of course, the same can be said for tubists and your ratio of auditionees to auditions seems appropriate. But it seems that a Eupher has possibly even a slight edge when it comes to teaching gigs.
It seems to me that if the musician is good enough, the gig will present itself no matter what instrument.
