I know many musicians in small to mid sized budget orchestras (for example Savannah, Syracuse, New Mexico, Rochester, Nashville and others) who have full-time jobs (or "day" jobs) in addition to their jobs with the orchestra. Most often these are teaching jobs. Many people make more money at their non-orchestra job, yet I doubt you would find many people who would say they are not "professional musicians." If I made $35,000/year from performing on nights and weekends and $40,000/year from my day-job than I am not a professional musician by your definition. At the same time if someone makes $30,000/year from being a musician and does nothing else, then they are "professionals." I think your definition needs some reworking.
